BJP member suspended from party

Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) youth wing leader had announced a reward of Rs 5 00,000 for cutting off Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union President Kanhaiya Kumar’s tongue for allegedly speaking against the BJP and Prime Minister Narendra Modi after his release on bail, was expelled from primary membership of the party for six years.

The president of district unit of BJP, Harish Shakya, told reporters, “Varshnay’s statement is his personal one and the party has nothing to do with it… he has been expelled from the primary membership of the party for making such a statement without the consent of party office bearers.”

Kanhaiya Kumar was arrested on February 12 over a rally at Delhi’s prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) at which anti-India slogans were chanted. He had been in custody in the capital’s Tihar jail since February 17.

He was released from prison on Thursday, nearly three weeks after his arrest on a controversial sedition charge that sparked major protests and a nationwide debate over free speech.
