Islamabad – Our Self-indulging Correspondent: Speaking at a press conference after Pakistani filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy won her second Oscar award, Imran Khan, leader of the Pakistani Tehreek-e-Insaf, said that though her work is commendable, she should also show the world the positive side of Pakistan.

“There isn’t just this business of acid attacks in the country or honour-killing,” he said. “There are also a lot of positives in the country, like a captain who led the nation to its first and till yet only ODI World Cup win.”

“She could also point out a cancer hospital, and dashing good looks of the captain that I have mentioned previously,” he said.

“Instead of highlighting the patriarchy prevalent in the country, she could make a film on a fellow who has been on the cover of Hello!, not just once or twice, but three times!”

“And this is the real Hello! I am talking about, not the Pakistani franchise.”

“Instead of making films about indoctrinated poor youth in the tribal areas, she could have made a film on the enlightened rich youth of the urban areas, many of whom refused to pay their toll-tax on the motorway upon the call of a charismatic leader who had asked them not to pay any form of tax till the government resigns.”

“Why be so negative,” he asked.

    2. Sharmeen Obaid's Oscar was a political one. In America the idea has taken hold that Muslims
are the worst violators of the rights of women and Islam provides the guidance for such behaviour.
Ms Chinoy showed them two examples of the degradation of two defiant women who tried to
uphold their rights and exert independence. They were both violently treated by men. This
confirmed the beliefs of America regarding women rights in the Islamic Republic. If she made
a documentary depicting independent women freely pursuing their interests, it won't be
nominated for Oscar let alone win one. By the way. The spotlight won the Oscar for the best
picture for political reason. It was shocking. Many had thought " Revenant" was a shoo in. The
academy wanted to highlight the abuse of young children in Catholic church. America is mostly Protestant.
Oscar like Nobel prize for peace and literature has political slant.
