NAB conducted 26 enquiries in five years, Senate told

Minister for Law and Justice Pervaiz Rashid on Friday said that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has conducted 26 enquiries and eight investigations into corruption cases forwarded by federal secretaries during the last five years.

In a written replying in the Senate, the minister said the NAB handled corruption cases as per mandate of NAO, 1999 and through the operational methodology like enquiries and investigations.

He said these cases were handled by regional office NAB Rawalpindi, Lahore, Quetta, Multan, Sukkur and Karachi during the same period.

Answering another question, he said officers in BPS-20 and 21 were presently working in NAB (HQ)/Regional NABs. He said Director General of NAB (Karachi) namely Lt. Col (r) Sirajul Naeem has been appointed as Director General (BS-21) on acting charge basis and he is exempted from NMC/NDU due to attaining the age of 58 years.

Further, Maj (r) Syed Burhan Ali, Director (BS-20) has been granted current charge of the post of Director General (BS-21), NAB Lahore and has completed his NMC.

He said as per section 3.36 of NAB`s TCS Chairman NAB was competent to grant current charge to BS-20 officers against the post of BPS-21 for three months.

He said extension beyond three months in current charge requires approval of next higher authority like government and senior most officers can be granted current charge for higher post.

In another written reply, Pervaiz Rashid said the terms and conditions of service including salary, pension, allowances and privileges of judges of Superior Judiciary are determined by the President under Paragraph 1, 2 and 3 of the Fifth Schedule to the Constitution and have been determined under Presidential Orders No. 2 and 3 of 1997.

He said Justice (r) Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry was provided 6000cc (Bullet Proof) Mercedes Benz Car No. GD-0341 by the Cabinet Division with the approval of the Prime Minister for three months from the date of his retirement i.e. 12-12-2013 and the expenditure on POL/maintenance had to be paid by the user through personal means but the Law and Justice Division bore an expenditure of Rs. 4,020,598/- (Rs. 645,569/- on POL + Rs. 3,375,029/- on repairs) under the Judgment dated 15-01-2014 passed by Islamabad High Court in writ petition.

He said the retired Chief Justice has also purchased official car No. CIA-2 (2400cc Honda Accord) on depreciated price of Rs. 549,817/- under the policy guidelines of Cabinet Division.

He said the Federation of Pakistan has filed Intra Court Appeal in the Islamabad High Court which inter alia include retrieval of bullet proof car.
