Politicians remained divided in their reaction to Kamal’s revelations that hit out at Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Chief Altaf Hussain for alleged “deception” and “poor management of party affairs”.

Referring to the salvos fired by former Karachi mayor Mustafa Kamal and MQM’s hurriedly-called press conference in response to his accusations against Altaf Hussain, Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari tweeted Shakespeare’s famous quote, “All the world’s a stage. And all the men and women merely players; they have their exits and their entrances.”

Former MQM MNA Nabil Gabol said that during his days in the party, he knew people belonging to the Muttahida used to visit India. “Around 70 per cent people belonging to MQM’s Rabita Committee have similar thoughts about Altaf Hussain,” he said. Gabol also accused former interior minister Rehman Malik of supporting a party “funded by Indian spy agency RAW”.

PPP Senator Saeed Ghani, answering a question about Malik’s role in negotiations with the MQM, said only the former interior minister could clarify his position about the revelations made by Kamal. About Indian funding, Ghani said that similar claims had surfaced in the past too, referring to the 1992 operation against the MQM which, he said, had been launched under the same pretext.

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Ali Zaidi said Kamal’s press conference vindicated his party’s stance on MQM, including its links with India’s RAW. “Kamal’s passionate candour regarding MQM’s links with RAW and criminal activities is a true vindication of our stance on MQM. We have been saying the same for the past few years in the media and at other public forums. However, I wish that Kamal would have spoken earlier but better late than never,” added Zaidi.

Another PTI leader Imran Ismail claimed that “his friends in MQM” had told him that Altaf Hussain had been upset that PTI had bagged over 30,000 votes in MQM strongholds in the 2013 general elections. Ismail, who once contested by-elections against MQM in the party’s stronghold NA-246, hinted that the PTI might approach Kamal and offer him to join the party.

Meanwhile, the official account of the PTI tweeted, “If Mustafa Kamal is saying PTI got more votes, he is validating that there was rigging and ECP involved.”

Lawyer and activist Mohammad Jibran Nasir tweeted, “Mustafa Kamal and Anees Qaimkhani could not be absolved by a simple press conference. They were MQM members for years. Must be (held) accountable in court.”

  1. All said, can not agree with Mr Jibran only because someone had been member of a partry with a Dictatorial mentality leadership. None could speak against due to fear of being killed. Imran Farooq dared to launch his own Party and he was killed in London by MQM killers – employees of Karachi Water Board. The list is long including their Chairman Azim Ahmed Tariq. They are speaking after their conscience refused to suffer anymore. PPP is accountable also because they always accommodated MQM in their Governments. What Bilawal says is childish. Even a school child knows what Shakespeare had said. Should try to understand the implications of a major Political party having links with RAW.
