Under the Mission Green Islamabad, a comprehensive tree plantation drive would be launched in the federal capital by involving all segments of the society.
It was decided during the 2nd meeting of the core committee of mission green Islamabad held at office of Chambers of Commerce and Industries (CCI) on Thursday.
During the meeting, it was informed that in Pakistan, forest cover is decreasing at an alarming rate. About 4.5% of Pakistan‘s land is comprised of forests, which is far below the desirable standard of 30% forest cover of a country.
The members were concerned because Islamabad was developed on the concept of green city but has become a victim of environmental issues. The meeting also decided to encourage the planting of indigenous tress and monitor the survival and growth of plants. The core committee showed satisfaction over the response from the society in the drive.
The committee approved to introduce a green award in order to recognise individual and collective contributions in tree plantation drive on annual basis. Patron of Mission Green Islamabad Zafar Iqbal Bakhtawari extended thanks to members of the core committee for undertaking collaborative efforts in making Islamabad, green city on voluntary basis.
