The Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) on Wednesday termed Protection of Women against Violence Bill 2015 passed by the Punajb Assembly as un-Islamic and contrary to the teachings of Islam.

The Council also said that some clauses of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) domestic violence bill were in contradiction with Shariah and the country’s Constitution.

CII Chairman Maulana Muhammad Khan Sheerani, while talking to media here, said the Council was holding discussion over the bill and some clauses of it were under consideration for being in contradiction with the law of the land and Shariah.

“CII’s formation and authority is protected under the Constitution. And if any assembly, whether provincial or national, moves to dissolve the Council, then that act would be considered against the Constitution,” asserted the CII chief.

The KP government had sent the domestic violence bill to the Council to seek its advice, as it believes the matter involves interpretation of Islamic injunctions.

Punjab’s Protection of Women against Violence Bill 2015 was signed into law on Monday. It declares physical violence, abusive language, stalking, cyber crimes, etc, against women a crime in the province.

“The bill is contrary to Constitution of Pakistan. Such laws cannot be made because they contradict the teachings of Islam,” sources quoted the Council members as saying.
