3 accused of under-marriage offence sent on judicial remand

In a police case of underage marriage of a girl with an elderly person, the police on Thursday submitted a medical report of Husun Bano which established her age as 15 years old.

According to the details, Investigation Officer Tasleem Bhurgari on Wednesday submitted a medical report in the court after which three suspects arrested in the case were sent on judicial remand to the Central Jail for 10 days. The Husri police arrested 55 years old Mohammed Yousuf Brohi, who was marrying Bano, on February 24 from a village in Husri rural town.

Brohi’s brother Majeed Brohi and the girl’s brother Abbass Brohi were also arrested and later nominated in the FIR which was lodged on the police complaint. The three suspects and unknown persons were booked in the case which was filed under the Sindh Child Marriage Restraint Act, 2014.

According to the Act, an offender who marries an underage child, the parents and facilitator can be punished with up to three years rigorous imprisonment after their conviction in the court of law. The law makes the offence cognizable, non-bailable and non-compoundable.
