The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday sought assistance from the prosecutors of federal government regarding maintainability of petition about returning of “Kohinoor” diamond from the Queen of Britain.
The petitioner, Barrister Javed Iqbal Jaffrey informed the court that East India Company snatched the Kohinoor diamond from Dalib Singh, the grandson of former Chief of Punjab Maharaja Ranjeet Singh, in Lahore and send it to Britain and presented it as a gift to Empress Victoria. He also stated that East India Company was not a state but a trade organization also and it had not legal authority to do so.
“The Kohinoor diamond was not gifted by one state to another state therefore Queen has no legal right over this diamond,” he added.
Jeffery also told the court to issue the directions to federal government to get back the Kohinoor diamond from government of Britain as it is the heritage of people of the Punjab and seek explanation from federal and provincial governments how this diamond reached in Britain?
The court summoned Attorney General for assistance and because of his absence adjourned the hearing till March 3, 2016.
