CII chairman says Qadri was driven by religious sentiments but his act was illegal

Council of Islamic Ideology (CII) Chairman Maulana Muhammad Sherani on Monday said that former Punjab Governor assassin Mumtaz Qadri was punished because he took the law into his own hands.

Qadri, a former police commando, had confessed to killing Salman Taseer . Taseer was killed in Islamabad’s Kohsar Market on January 4, 2011.

Qadri was against  Taseer’s objection to the blasphemy law. The Anti-Terrorism Court convicted and condemned Qadri to death. He was executed at the Adiala Jail on Monday morning.

The CII chairman said that Qadri was driven by his religious sentiments however, his act was illegal.

He said, “I respect Qadri’s religious sentiments but I respect the Pakistan’s constitution more.”

Sherani also discussed the Women Protection Act and said it is against Article 6 of the Constitution and any person violating the Constitution should be punished. Sharia laws already have all rights secured for women’s protection and there was no need to frame a new law.
