Summary moved for construction of new accommodations for govt employees

A summary has been put up for approval of the prime minister for the construction of new accommodations to overcome shortage of houses for the federal government employees.

The government had imposed a ban on the construction of new houses 10 years ago, due to which the ministry is facing shortage of residences, said an official of ministry of housing and works.

To a question, he said that more than 3,000 accommodations are in occupation of retired federal government employees or their families.

In Islamabad, 172 government accommodations had been got vacated from illegal occupants by the enforcement branch of Estate Office under the Accommodation Allocation Rules, 2002.

The matter had also been taken up by the standing committees of national assembly and senate on housing and works, he said.

The standing committees of national assembly on housing and works adopted and approved a fresh survey of federal colonies to identify the retired/unauthorized occupants of the government accommodations.

For this purpose, he said, it has been recommended that a meeting of all stakeholders including public representatives of areas be convened to discuss various proposals to settle the modalities prior to initiating the survey.

He said that both the bodies had also recommended that national housing authority may be given task to formulate a policy and to make viable proposals in respect of constructing new flats.
