A summary has been sent for approval to the Prime Minister for construction of new government accommodation to overcome shortage of houses for the employees of the federal government.
The government imposed ban on the construction of new houses for the last 10 years, due to which the ministry is facing shortage of residences, said an official of Ministry of Housing and Works on Thrusday.
To a question, he said that more than 3,000 accommodations are in occupation of retired federal government employees or their families.
In Islamabad, 172 government accommodations had been got vacated from illegal occupants by the enforcement branch of Estate Office under the Accommodation Allocation Rules, 2002.
The matter had also been taken up by the Standing, Committees of National Assembly and Senate on Housing and Works, he said.
The Standing Committees of National Assembly on Housing and Works adopted and approved a fresh survey of Federal Colonies to identify the retired and unauthorised occupants of the government accommodations.
For this purpose, he said, it has been recommended that a meeting of all stakeholders including public representatives of areas be convened to discuss various proposals to settle the modalities prior to initiating the survey.
He said that both the bodies had also recommended that the National Housing Authority may be given task to formulate a policy and to make viable proposals in respect of constructing new flats.
