The Islamabad Electric Supply Company (IESCO) has failed to implement digital mobile meter reading system in the region, which would have ensured correct meter readings to address the increasing issue of overbilling.

IESCO has purchased 1,545 mobile phones, which are worth 30.9 million, to distribute to their meter readers and some other IESCO officials. In the first phase, the digital mobile reading system has been launched in various localities of the twin city and the system seems to be working for about 2.5 million IESCO consumers.

The picture of the meters taken by these mobile phones along with the reading would be printed on the bills, to guaranty accuracy.

The IESCO officials said that in the first month of the implementing they were able to collect only 10% data through digital meter reading system and now they can collect 91% of the data through digital reading system.

When the new technology was introduced they faced problems such as the mobile phone’s battery timing, software issues and others however with the passage of time all problems are being solved.

The IESCO sources said that previously readers sent wrong information but now they can’t.

He said that we are still facing the problem in Murree, Nathia Gali, Jhika Gali,Kalar Saydan and others areas about meter reading system.

Additional director general said, the project of purchasing modern mobile phones is completed under the PITC department.
