At the United Nations, Pakistan has forcefully opposed adding new permanent members in the Security Council.

Speaking at the United Nation, Ambassador Maleeha Lodhi said the move would only serve the self-centered interests of a few countries.

She said that Pakistan stands for creating a new category of members, who are not permanent, but who have longer durations and can get re-elected.

She stressed the need for the justification of every seat added to the Security Council on the grounds of its contribution to its representativeness and effectiveness of the world body.

On the working methods of the Security Council, Ambassador Lodhi said that there was a broad consensus on improved transparency, inclusive decision-making and accountability of the Council.
