Members from opposition parties during the National Assembly session on Wednesday accused the government of deliberately delaying the national population census.

Addressing a press conference, Opposition leader in the National Assembly Syed Khurshid Shah said that the government should not delay the census in the wake of questions being raised by different segments of society.

He insisted that every possible initiative should be taken to conduct population census as it will provide a clear cut idea for the government to take the country on way to development. He urged the government to devise a comprehensive strategy to overcome the issues being raised before the census.

“The government should complete the census in different phases if the army is unable to provide 0.375 million personnel at the same time,” he said.

Addressing the reporters, Pakistan People’s Party leader Nafisa Shah said that rumours were on the rise that the census could be delayed in Balochistan and other areas. She said that country’s development and progress was linked to the successful conducting of census in the country.

She asked the government to conduct census on time so that funds and other programmes could be initiated in the light of the new population.

She also alleged that the government was planning to sell the PIA to its blue-eyed players and registration of a new company was a precursor to the privatization of the national flag carrier.
