MQM’s hunger strike against Altaf media ban ends

The Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) token hunger strike ended on Monday.
The party had started a four-day symbolic hunger strike outside the Karachi Press Club from February 19 to February 33 to protest the ban on speeches, news, views and interviews of MQM chief Altaf Hussain.
Senior MQM Deputy Convener Dr Farooq Sattar, deputy conveners Kahiful Wara, Nasreen Jalil, party’s Coordination Committee members Zareen Majeed, Arshad Hasan, CEC In-charge Furqan Attiyab, MNAs, MPAs, LG representatives, workers and supports took part in the strike.
Participants of the hunger strike had displayed banners and placards, demanding the authorities lifted the ban media coverage of MQM chief Hussain.
Talking to media, MQM leader and Karachi’s mayor-designate Waseem Akhtar claimed that people from all walks of life had participated in the hunger strike.
On January 19, top MQM leader Dr Farooq Sattar said that a four-day symbolic hunger strike would register people’s protest against the ban.
Sattar said the symbolic hunger strike was a token to show solidarity with Altaf Hussain against his media ban by the Lahore High Court.
He said his media blackout was a sheer violation of human rights, freedom of speech and Article-19 of the Constitution.
