Party chief takes notice of the differences, calls meeting of the party leaders and the CEC

Serious differences have arisen among the leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) over the procedure of intraparty elections and many senior leaders have differing views on the matter. PTI Chairman Imran Khan taking the notice of the issue has summoned the meeting of senior party leaders and the chief election commission (CEC) to resolve the issue.

Sources said on Monday that the parliamentary group of the PTI and the party’s former vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi was of the opinion that only election for the president’s slot should be conducted while the president should be given the power to nominate other office bearers. Many senior party leaders are supporting the views of Qureshi, the sources added.

Qureshi is of the view that if intraparty election is conducted for all party positions, it could lead to differences among the party leadership and the formation of groups.

On the other hand, CEC Tasleem Noorani wants to conduct elections on five key positions of the party including the president’s slot, and this has led to serious differences among the two senior leaders of the party.

Meanwhile, PTI Chairman Imran Khan has summoned the meeting of the senior party leaders to develop consensus and to find out solutions acceptable to all party leaders.
