The Lahore High Court Monday admitted a petition against medicine price hike and sought reply from the federal and the Punjab governments on the issue within 15 days.
Justice Shujat Ali Khan of LHC heard the case. The petitioner’s lawyer Advocate Ishtiaq Chaudhry adopted the stance that pharmaceutical companies had increased the prices of drugs of fatal diseases such as cancer and hepatitis on their own without any set formula.
No procedure had been devised by the government for determining drug prices whereas a number of patients were unable to buy such expensive medicines, the petitioner maintained.
The petitioner requested the court to direct the government to carry out effective legislation for bringing the pharmaceutical companies under the law regarding the determination of medicine prices.
The plea also required legal action against pharmaceutical companies who had raised the prices on their own.
