A Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Unit is being established in the Ministry of Planning and Development to coordinate the matters pertaining to SDGs with the provincial governments and the federal ministries.

In addition, an amount of Rs 100 million has already been earmarked in Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2015-16 for Pakistan Initiative for SDGs.

Official sources on Sunday said an understanding had been reached recently on outcome document for Post-2015 Development Agenda including 17 sustainable development goals and 169 associated targets.

The outcome document further defines the targets as aspirational and global, with each government setting its own national targets taking into account different national realities, capacities and levels of development and guided by the global level of ambition.

The sources said Pakistan had effectively participated in the negotiations for the outcome document in line with its national interests and priorities and added Pakistan Vision 2025 to it besides recognising the significance of post-2015 development agenda/SDGs. Pakistan has also expressed advance commitment to realisation of these goals as it states that Vision 2025 will serve as “launching pad for the complete fulfillment of the SDGs before their target date of 2030.”

The sources said that Pakistan was in the process of initiating necessary preparatory measures and steps at the national and provincial level for designing its strategy for implementing this new global agreement.
