An Indian village in PM Modi’s home province of Gujarat has banned the use of cell phones by single women, deeming it a “nuisance to society”.
Members of the Suraj village council in Mehsana, passed the resolution in early February.
“Community leaders felt that just like liquor, the use of mobile phones by unmarried women was a nuisance to society,” village head Devshi Vankar told AFP, adding a similar ban for school boys would be announced soon, and that mobile phones were distracting for unmarried women who should be studying or doing their chores. Violators will face a INR 2,100 fine. However, young people could talk on their parent’s or relatives’ phones.
