A Mumbai commuter train hit and killed four labourers who were walking between the tracks Friday, an official said, the latest deadly incident on the city’s notoriously dangerous rail network.

The victims, aged between 18 and 27, were run over around 6:20 am (0050 GMT) between the Kurla and Vidyavihar stations in the north of India’s teeming financial capital.

“All were returning home after finishing work at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus,” deputy commissioner of railway police Rupali Ambure told AFP via text message, referring to Mumbai’s main railway station.

An average of nine people die every day on Mumbai’s congested rail network. Many are hit while crossing tracks and others fall from overcrowded carriages ferrying commuters from outlying suburbs to business districts.
