Usman Riaz’s fanboy moment with Steven Spielberg

Usman Riaz, the talented musician and animator, is making waves for Pakistan’s first hand-drawn animated feature film The Glassworker.

After Apple roped in the talented musician to present a live demo of his art works and share it with audiences, Usman added another feather to his cap by showing his talent to Hollywood giant Steven Spielberg.

The youngest TedGlobal Fellow from Karachi took to Facebook to share the news of his interaction with the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

“So Steven Spielberg just saw The Glassworker storyboards and animations on my iPad Pro! We talked about our love for Hayao Miyazaki, story boarding and film techniques and just how fascinating animation is. It was a wonderful experience FiftyThree Kickstarter TED Fellows,” he shared in a post.

Earlier, he uploaded The Glassworker teaser which debuted at TED:

Usman also shared the idea behind this new concept in an interview with local newspapers saying, “Pakistan really has no hand-drawn animation industry. With this film and studio, we hope to lay the foundation and support a new generation of artists.”

The Glassworker is a coming-of-age story, the film follows a young boy named Vincent who is learning the art of glass-blowing from his father. As he grows older, Vincent falls in love with a frequent visitor of his shop. The storyline chronicles the lives of the two lovers through their formative years and how they attempt to sustain the relationship as their situations become increasingly complicated.

The venture will be produced under the banner of his brainchild Mano Animation Studio. But unfortunately, it will take another three years for The Glassworker to see the light of day … unless Spielberg steps in.
