Health ministry allowed companies to increase medicine prices

The ministry of health regulation had allowed the pharmaceutical companies to increase prices of medicine by eight per cent. It was revealed in Senate’s standing committee on health regulation meeting on Thursday.

The Senate’s standing committee on health regulation chairman, Senator Sajjad Ali Toori, chaired a meeting in the Parliament House on Thursday. During the meeting, matters pertaining to the situation after increase in prices of medicine were reviewed.

Minister of National Health Services Regulation and Coordination Saira Afzal Tarar said that the ministry was formulating a new summary to control the prices of medicines. After the approval of the summary, the government could impose fine on the companies which had increased the prices, he added. She revealed that the ministry had allowed the pharmaceutical industries to raise prices by eight per cent but the companies had increased the prices up to 50 per cent.
