Court moved against PM Sharif’s NAB criticism

The Lahore High Court (LHC) was moved on Thursday against Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif’s criticism of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB).

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s Gohar Nawaz Sindhu, in his petition, submitted that the prime minister had tried to interfere in the working of the Bureau.

“PM Sharif issued this statement to exert pressure on the NAB. Politicians want to impede the NAB in its action against corrupt people,” claimed the petitioner.

The petitioner requested the court to issue an order to stop the prime minister from interfering in the working of the accountability watchdog.

On Tuesday, PM Sharif had criticised the corruption watchdog and threatened to clip its powers over “harassment of government officers”. He had said that bureaucrats were afraid of taking decisions because they were fearful of the NAB harassment.

The PM had said that the NAB terrified government officers and hindered them from performing their duties, while NAB officials entered the houses and offices of ‘innocent people’ without verifying the authenticity of the charges against them.
