Traditional rivals Pakistan and India have shared icy relations and fought wars over Kashmir ever since gaining independence, but it seems that Twitter didn’t get the memo.
In fact, Twitter thinks Jammu and Kashmir is in China. When you tag your location as Jammu and Kashmir while tweeting, Twitter shows the area as falling under the People’s Republic of China.
However, Twitter did get one thing right. It placed Azad Jammu and Kashmir in Pakistan.
This isn’t the first time an issue like this has cropped up. Last year, Punjab government in Pakistan directed all eighth grade geography books containing incorrect maps of Pakistan to be taken off shelves. The maps mentioned Hazara and Seraikistan as provinces and referred to Indian-held Kashmir as a disputed territory.
Further, Indian government took Al Jazeera news channel off air last year for five days after officials insisted it had repeatedly shown wrong maps of disputed Kashmir.
An official had said at the time that the order was made as the maps showed parts of the Himalayan Kashmir region in arch rival Pakistan and China, an extremely sensitive issue in India.
