At least eight people including a woman died and five others were injured when a train hit a truck on an open railway crossing in Tando Adam late Sunday night.

According to details, a truck carrying labourers was crossing an open railway crossing at Muneer Sepio area, when Lahore-bound Ghulam Fareed Express rammed into it. Eight people died on the spot and five others were injured and were moved to different hospitals of Tando Adam and Hyderabad. All the deceased and injured belonging to a labourer family of Village Darya Khan Nahiyoon were going to work.

Sindh assembly members raised the issue on the floor of the House and demanded that all open railway crossings in Sindh be gated to secure innocent human lives.

DS Karachi Railway Nisar Ahmed Memon along with a team visited the site of the incident near Allah Dino Sand railway station. A statement issued by the Pakistan Railways Karachi Division’s media cell said that no negligence of the railways was found in the incident.

Dozens of railway crossings in Sindh are without proper gates. A number of people have died in Karachi alone, as the Pakistan Railways has failed to erect protective barriers along its main railway line passing through the city from the City Railway Station to the Jumma Goth Railway station. The citizens of Karachi have repeatedly demanded of the Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique to erect protective walls and barriers along this railway line but no action has been taken on their demands.
