Presidential system suits us

There is a need for adopting presidential system of govt in Pakistan to get rid of British parliamentary system bequeathed to us by our colonial masters with all its ills. The Westminster type govt based on 51% votes to induct a govt finally results in throwing up a party head like Mr Zardari based on its party members who are beholden to him for being elected. The opposition with sizeable number of votes always tries to dislodge the sitting govt unless there is unholy alliance between the two. If we have a president elected by direct vote he could appoint his own ministers. A system could be worked out to elect a president belonging to a certain province by notation to safeguard smaller provinces.

In presidential system the MNAs of National Assembly would not be appointed Federal Ministers as they would only legislate and not govern. Federal ministers or advisers would be chosen by the president from deserving persons answerable to him. The present mandate intoxicated prime ministers would not exist like the US congressmen and would only legislate thus leaving no chance of corruption in vogue in the existing parliamentary system. This would be more in line with the Islamic system of having a ruler responsible for unifying the country in contrast with the bickering of federal and provincial govts in all matters big and small as has been our experience of past six decades. This would cut across all provincial bigotry and narrow minded views of politicians based on limited interests driven by provincial rather than national views. Just calculate how many prime ministers we had in our chequered history that could not deliver good governance.
