Advisor to Prime Minister Dr Asif Kirmani on Sunday asked Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed to step down for his failure to protect the lives and property of the citizens.
The AJK government had completely failed to deliver while corruption was rampant in all state departments, therefore, Chaudhry Chaudhry Abdul Majeed should quit his office immediately, he said while addressing a press conference on Sunday.
Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) AJK Secretary General Shah Gulam Qadir and other party leaders were also present during the press conference.
Referring to a clash between the workers of PML-N and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), he said it was a condemnable incident which had taken a precious life. The AJK prime minister, he alleged, was in Nakyal and giving directions to his party’s activists during their clash with the PML-N workers.
The incident, he said, showed ulterior motives of Chaudhry Abdul Majeed. He had distorted the facts and conveyed misleading information to the PPP leadership. PPP leaders Asif Ali Zardari and Bilawal Bhutto should depute some sane person to get correct information about the incident, he said.
Dr Kirmani said the participants of PPP youth rally while passing through Nikyal Bazzar chanted ‘indecent and vulgar’ slogans against the PML-N leadership before attacking shops and business outlets of PML-N workers.
The PML-N workers then reacted in self-defence and a clash broke out resulting in loss of a precious life, which was highly regrettable and condemnable, he added.
The advisor alleged that the AJK police also abetted the attackers. A crackdown was launched against the PML-N workers and their houses were raided by the police who also harassed women and children.
The AJK police, he regretted, had not even registered a first information report (FIR) on the complaint of PML-N workers who were either injured or their shops and property were damaged.
Rather, an FIR was registered against the PML-N workers. The son of PML-N leader Sardar Sikandar Hayat Khan had been nominated in the FIR even though he was not present at the venue at that time, he added.
He held the AJK prime minister personally responsible for the incident. The prime minister, he said, made a provocative speech carried by a section of media on January 11 which said that the dead bodies of federal ministers would be sent back, if the federal government imposed its decisions in AJK.
The PML-N workers, on the other hand, were peaceful as was evident from peaceful holding of all their conventions, he added.
Dr Kirmani said that all the political parties should evolve a code of conduct to avoid giving negative statements and raising abusive slogans for peaceful conduct of polls in the AJK.
He said the AJK prime minister was even refusing to admit the judicial commission, which had been constituted by his own government to probe the Nakyal incident.
Prime Minster Majeed should wait for the report of the commission, which will bring all the facts about the incident before the people, he added.
Dr Kirmani said Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif had directed all the party workers to remain peaceful for holding of transparent elections in the AJK.
He called upon the PML-N workers to exercise restraint and remain peaceful. They should collect videos and clippings of media reports regarding the incident and present the same before the judicial commission for bringing facts to light, he added.
To a question regarding a no-confidence motion against Chaudhry Abdul Majeed, he said Prime Minister Sharif wanted continuation of the democratic system in the state and that was the reason that no such step was taken.
He said Kashmiris were brothers of all Pakistanis and the prime minister had highlighted their cause at all international forums.
