AJK prime minister announces day of mourning over PPP worker deaths

Azad Jammu and Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed on Sunday condemned the Nakyal incident and announced to observe Monday as a day of mourning across AJK.

At a press conference, the AJK PM vowed not to let any conspiracy to postpone the elections succeed.

Shops were closed and business activities remained suspended across AJK on Sunday, as the situation remained tense a day after the clash between the workers of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) in which two workers of PPP lost their lives.

The local administration summoned heavy contingents of police and Rangers for continuous patrolling in Kotli.

Police rounded up 11 workers of PML-N on Sunday while 15 were taken into custody on Saturday in raids conducted in different parts of the valley.

Section 144 has been put in place in AJK while the PPP has announced to observe Monday as a black day.

The clash between the workers of the two parties took place when PPP activists organised a workers convention at Degree College ground in Nakyal. PML-N workers threw rocks at them, reportedly retaliating to PPP workers’ chanting of anti-PML-N slogans. The ensuing clash left two people including Munshi Khan dead while six others were severely injured.

Police officers resorted to aerial firing and tear gas to disperse the angry workers while the security personnel also cordoned off the entire area.

Azad Kashmir Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed was on his way to address an election rally of the PPP candidate Javed Ludhianvi, when the PML-N supporters attacked.

All the arrested men have been shifted to Kotli while contingents of police and army have brought the law and order situation under control.

Police have registered a case against 70 people over the killings of the PPP workers and for hurling stones at their opponents.

Farooq Sikander, the son of former AJK prime minister Sikandar Hayat, has also been nominated in the case.

Meanwhile, an emergency meeting of the Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) People’s Party Parliamentary will be held on Tuesday at Zardari House.

According to a press release, PPP Political Affairs Incharge Faryal Talpur has called the meeting of AJK Peoples Party Parliamentary Party to discuss the situation arising after the killing of PPP workers at Nakyal.

Talpur conveyed her condolences over the death of Ch Munshi to Prime Minister Ch Abdul Majeed the other day over phone.
