Dr Asim case: Rangers counsel says investigation officer’s report ‘based on dishonesty’

Rangers and Sindh government have once again entered a tiff in Dr Asim Hussain’s case as Rangers counsel declared investigation officer’s report ‘based on dishonesty’.

Alleged terror facilitator, former petroleum minister Dr Asim Hussain was presented before an anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Saturday.

The court has returned the report filed by the investigation officer, terming it incomplete.

A case was registered against Dr Asim Hussain in Karachi’s North Nazimabad Police Station in November 2015 for allegedly providing shelter to terrorists and target killers in his hospital.

Earlier on February 9, accountability court (AC) in Karachi sent Dr Hussain to jail on a judicial remand till February 22 in a case of corruption, money laundering and granting illegal contracts.

Dr Asim was taken to the court by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB). Investigation Officer Zameer Abbasi presented a two-page report to the judge, stating that the former petroleum minister was unable to provide satisfactory counter-arguments to officers during investigation.

The report accused Dr Asim of staging shortage of fertilisers during his tenure as federal minister which cost the government around Rs 450 billion. The report further stated that Dr Asim granted unlawful favours to K-Electric.

On January 30, former petroleum minister’s family claimed that the Rangers had confiscated the Canadian passport of the accused after his arrest and never returned it.

Talking to media in the Sindh High Court (SHC)’s premises, Dr Asim’s family stated that the accused is a Canadian citizen. However, the passport was confiscated after his arrest, they said.
