Couples spend £235 on Valentine’s Day

Britain’s most romantic town has been revealed as Weybridge in Surrey. Couples here spend a whopping £235 on their loved one for Valentine’s Day, which is nearly four times the national average.

The genteel Surrey commuter town is home to TV presenters Eamonn Holmes and Ruth Langsford, and to singer Tom Jones.

Research, revealed by the UK’s leading online beauty and fragrance retailer Escentual.com, found Weybridge residents are the most generous in love.

People in the town spend £235.88 on fragrance and beauty presents while the rest of us spend £61.19 on average on Valentines presents.

Soham in Cambridgeshire was second with £231.30 while Brecon in Mid Wales was third, spending on average £206.50 at Valentines.

The figures also revealed the most cold-hearted live in Derbyshire with two towns in the region finishing in the 10 least spending places.

Escentual.com CEO Rakesh Aggarwal said, “Our research showed a huge difference in what people across the country were prepared to spend on their loved ones for Valentines, from £235 at the top to £17 at the bottom of the range. We also found that spending on Valentine’s gift is up 18 percent over the past three years – and average expenditure on fragrance and beauty gifts is now just over £61, whereas it was around £51 in 2013. This might be down in part to the rise of consumer confidence after the UK finally came out of a lengthy and deep recession but we like to think that the public in general has maybe become a little bit more romantic as well.”

Women in Alfreton Derbyshire however may be less inclined to think that their other half has become more of a Romeo in the past few years.

The north east Derbyshire former coal mining town was the lowest spending town in the UK with a lowly average spend of £17.53, with Mountain Ash in Mid Glamorgan finishing second spending on average £25.28 and Wallingford in Oxfordshire was the third lowest with £25.55.
