Security arrangements made for around 59 percent of government schools are inadequate while the government could not have its Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) implemented in ‘extremely sensitive’ schools.

Despite using funds worth Rs 3.21 billion for security of schools, around 58.91 percent institutes lack proper security arrangements.

At least 4,607 schools, colleges and universities that fall in ‘extremely sensitive’ and sensitive’ categories do not have boundary walls. Around 90 percent schools lack barbed wires and walk-through gates.

CCTV cameras installed in different institutes are substandard and around 65 percent of the installations bear useless results. At least 33 percent ‘extremely sensitive’ schools lack monitoring equipment while 53 percent of ‘sensitive’ institutions have no security cameras.

Security of the government schools has been left with gardeners and watchmen in the premises. Guards of paltry number of schools have metal detectors.

The provincial government had issued 20-point SOPs to ensure maximum security of students and education institutes. However, none of the government schools have witnessed implementation of the SOPs in it.

Security guards and watchmen have not been appointed in as many as 249 ‘extremely sensitive’ schools.

Reportedly, government school in Punjab Law Minister Rana Sanaullah’s constituency, PP-70 Faisalabad does not have boundary walls making students vulnerable to untoward incidents in country that is struggling against insurgencies.
