The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday adjourned the hearing of bail pleas filed by the employees of Axact in fake degree scam and money laundering cases.
Muhammad Rizwan, Adnan Saboor, Arif Hussain, Rizwan Ahmed and other employees of Axact approached the SHC to obtain the bail after their pleas were dismissed by the sessions court. The applicants submitted that the charges labeled against them were baseless; therefore, they should be granted bails.
Headed by Justice Syed Muhammad Farooq Shah, the SHC bench issued notices to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and the prosecutor general Sindh directing them to file their comments in the next hearing.
Lawyers Abid Zuberi and Amir Mansoob Qureshi appeared and argued on behalf of the accused persons. The court directed the FIA’s counsel to file their comments in the next hearing which was scheduled on the 18th of February. Earlier, the special prosecutor of FIA, Barrister Zahid Jameel, had disassociated himself from the proceedings of the bail application owing to unknown reasons. The fake degrees scandal came to light when the New York Times published an investigative report alleging that Axact’s involvement in selling fake degrees online.
ACTING VC RESTRAINED
The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Friday restrained acting vice chancellor of the Dow University of Health & Sciences (DUHS) from holding the syndicate’s meeting.
The SHC bench headed by Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar was hearing the petition filed by the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) who moved the court requesting to restrain Prof Masood Hameed from holding syndicate meetings as he could not do so as an acting VC. The petitioners submitted that the SHC had restrained the acting VC form holding syndicate meetings but he had called the meeting which came within court’s contempt; therefore, contempt of court’s proceeding be initiated against him.
