The Lahore High Court Tuesday disposed off applications filed by Pakistan Muslim league-Q, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, Pakistan People’s Party and others for staying elections on reserved seats and other slots under amended Punjab Local Government Ordinance.

Justice Shahid Waheed heard the applications filed by the petitioners in petitions challenging recent amendments in the ordinance.

During the hearing, petitioner’s counsel Mubeen ud Din Qazi arguing before the court submitted that the petitioners had challenged the amendments in Local Government Ordinance through different petitions.

But, he said, now Election Commission had issued the schedule for election on reserved seats under amended Punjab Local government ordinance.

He pleaded the court to stay the elections being held under amended Punjab local government ordinance till decision of the petitions.

However, local government’s counsel and law officers informed the court that the commission had postponed the election on reserved seats.

They maintained that the assembly had also passed amendments in the local government ordinance.

At this, the court observed that the applications had become infructuous as the Commission had postponed the schedule. The court disposed of all applications.

It is pertinent to mention that the court will hear the main petitions against amendments in Local Government Ordinance on March 2.
