The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Resources has decided to schedule a high level delegation visit to Iran to discuss Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline project.
The visit was proposed for shortly after the prime minister’s visit to Qatar which is being planned shortly.
A local news agency quoted a senior official in the ministry as saying that the visit was decided after receiving a letter from the Iranian ministry to come up with a comprehensive strategy for initiating the mega project as soon as possible.
The official said that the tour was earlier scheduled for February 6, but due to the PM and the ministry high-ups’ visit to Qatar, the Iran tour was rescheduled for later.
“The IP gas pipeline project has been delayed due to international sanctions on Iran,” the official said. He said that in first phase, the government will start work on the 80 km Gawadar Link project.
In this connection, he said, Pakistan has already awarded LNG pipeline contract to a Chinese company.
The Chinese company has completed work on the construction of 711 km pipeline’s terminal.
The total cost of the project is estimated at Rs 2.5 billion while 85 per cent of the funding will come from the government of China.
To end energy crisis in the country, the current government is working on various domestic and International projects to overcome power shortage, he said.
The TAPI (Turkemanistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-India) pipeline project has already been kicked off.
