Ideal business opportunity for telecom sector exists in Pakistan: PM Nawaz

Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Monday that the incumbent government’s policies based on incentives had restored the confidence of international business community to invest in Pakistan.

Speaking during a meeting with VimpelCom CEO Jean Yves Charlier who called on him at the PM House on Monday, Nawaz Sharif said that the government’s clear policies had revolutionised the Telecom sector and successful launch of 3G and 4G in the recent past was a testimony to this.

“We are encouraging the telecom companies to expand their outreach to far-flung areas of the country so that majority of the masses benefit from the technology,” he added.

The prime minister said that Pakistan offers an ideal environment for the telecom sector as the country has one of the largest cellular phone subscriber base.

“Our government believes in open and transparent business policies so that both local and foreign investors are further motivated to explore business opportunities in Pakistan,” the prime minister said.

Terming Pakistan’s Telecom industry promising and vibrant, Jean Yves Charlier appreciated the business friendly policies of the present government. The VimpelCom CEO said that Tele-density in Pakistan was one of the highest in the region which mad the country one the favourite destinations for foreign investors.

The meeting was also attended by Minister of State for IT Ms Anusha Rehman Khan and other senior government officials.
