Lahore – Our Roads and Flyovers Correspondent: The PML(N)-led federal government okayed on Thursday the plan by the ministry of commerce to export 1.5 million news roads and flyovers.
“In this increasingly competitive environment of international trade, the government has decided to focus on the sectors which are its competitive advantage,” said Hassan Zaidi, Chairman Export Promotion Board.
“Looking at things through the Ohlin-Hescher model of international trade, this is the only way out,” he said.
Analysts agree.
“The PML-N has garnered a competitive edge in this sector. And now that the courts have intervened in the party’s plan to cover Pakistan’s total landmass with tarmac, this is the best option with which to utilise its competitive edge,” said Dr Ali Cheema, head of the economics department at LUMS.
The federal government has planned to base its operations in Gadani, where the roads and flyovers are going to be constructed and then shipped off to the countries importing them.
The move, however, was met with some political opposition from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf. “Were we in power, we would have exported election jingles instead,” said Dr Shireen Mazari of the PTI.
