Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor has expressed concern that megastarsShah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan will be ‘scared’ to talk on existing issues in the aftermath of widespread criticism they faced over their comments on the growing ‘intolerance’ in India.
“Just imagine the way we are reacting to someone like Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan (on their comments). They will be afraid to say or talk about things because of the negative reactions. We should be supportive of people who have opinions — good, bad or ugly. Everybody should have a right to speak,” said the Neerja actor at the launch of song Ankhian Milaayenge Darr Se, from her upcoming film.
Shah Rukh’s comments on intolerance in the country saw some radical groups slamming the actor, while some also vandalised theatres screening his film Dilwale.
On the other hand, when Aamir highlighted his wife’s fear of living in India due to certain violent incidents, he sparked a widely-discussed controversy, including comments from members of the Bollywood fraternity.
Sonam termed these reactions as ‘scary’. She is known to be outspoken about her opinions, and quips that’s the reason she gets called to speak at conclaves, since the organisers “know she will make good copy”.
She often lands up in controversy for the same like her comments on Ranbir Kapoor along with Deepika Padukone on Karan Johar’s show or getting trolled for her “misogynist” tweet on the meat ban in Mumbai.
A fear she would like to overcome is, “I don’t ever not want to have an opinion on something.”
She added, “I went through this. I said something and I was trolled on another level. But at the end of the day, if I have this platform, I have this voice, people actually listen to what I have to say. I’m going to keep doing it no matter what. Eventually somebody will hear what I have to say.”
Sonam’s brief appearance in Coldplay’s music video recently was also subject to trolls.
