Lal Masjid cleric Maulana Abdul Aziz has submitted his bail plea to the court.

Aziz has applied for interim bail in two cases at the Islamabad High Court. He is facing cases for hate speech and issuing threats to state institutions.

An Islamabad court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant for Aziz in December 2014.

During the proceedings, the court said that if Aziz was not under detention he should be produced before the court on Tuesday (today).

Aziz changed his stance on seeking bail following the protests organised by civil society members outside Lal Masjid. They also registered an FIR against the cleric and insisted that police initiate investigation against Aziz.

“I am ready to apply for a bail, but some state institutions want to arrest and martyr me as I campaign for the enforcement of Quran and Sunnah,” a statement issued by the Lal Masjid quoted the Imam as saying in a video message. “A fake case has created this situation. Now we are being told to seek bail and that appearance in the court is a must,” he added.
