A contempt of court plea on Monday was filed in Lahore High Court (LHC) over continued construction work on the metro train project around historical sites in contravention to the court’s order.
The petition, filed by Azhar Siddiq Advocate on the behalf of civil society, stated that the court had barred the authorities from construction work in 200 feet radius of historical sites but the Punjab government was not following the directive.
The two-member LHC bench headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh had earlier in its verdict on the civil society’s petition had ordered the authorities not to carry out work on the metro train project within the radius of 200 feet around the historical sites.
The historical sites falling on the route of the train include Shalimar Gardens, Gulabi Garden Gateway, Budu Ka Aawa, Chauburji, Zeb-un-Nisa’s tomb, Lakshmi Building, GPO, Aiwan-e-Auqaaf, Supreme Court Registry Building, Saint Andrew Church, Mauj-e-Darya Shrine and Mosque.
