While the Rawalpindi revenue department has outpaced all other government departments in corruption, the Anti-Corruption Department could only dispose nominal cases with a recovery of only Rs50 million from sum of over Rs1 billion taken as bribe from the public.
According to official documents available with Online, 924 applications against corrupt officials were received by the Anti Corruption Department (ACD)over the past year. The anti-corruption body could take up only 379 cases and recovered Rs50 million.
According to the documents, around 233 complaints were referred to respective departments for further action, however, these departments paid no heed as corrupt officials used influence to thwart inquiries against them.
A senior official in the ACD wishing not to be named claimed that inquiry on 594 applications was under way while record 103 complaints were being perused for evidence and other supporting documents.
The officials also said that 1049 inquiries were held during 2014-15 and 571 complaints were disposed of while 84 cases were sent to different departments for further action.
As many as 364 complaints were received against revenue officials for taking bribe for transferring land, manipulation and tempering with documents and transfer of power of attorney. Police stood in the second against whom 220 complaints were received, the documents reveal. Similarly, 80 complaints were filed against TMAs officials for taking bribe, 31 against education officials, 27 against national highways officials and one against the labour department in the last one year.
When contacted, a spokesperson for the Anti-Corruption Department said that some inquiries against corruption were still under way, some have been disposed of while many cases have been referred to respective departments for action against corrupt officials.
