The Sindh Assembly on Thursday diverted the attention of the minister of transport towards the fact that rickshaws and taxis in Karachi were being run without fare meters which was a violation of law.

Karachi is considered the worst city of the world regarding commuters’ rights and urban public transport facilities. From commuters traveling on rooftops of buses to meter-less taxis and rickshaws, this city depicts a sorry picture of the performance of the provincial transport department.

MQM lawmaker Jamal Ahmed, through a call attention notice, asked from the transport minister to explain why meters had been removed from public transport like taxis and rickshaws in Karachi and what action the government has taken to stop this violation of law. The mover expressed serious concern on the violation of public transport rules in Karachi and demanded that the transport department should take action in this regard. However, Sindh Transport Minister Mumtaz Jakhrani said that his department was taking action against the owners of the taxis and rickshaws who were plying without fare meters. He said heavy fines had already been recovered from the violators.
