Orange train: Unicef expresses concern over demolition of historical sites

The United Nations Children Fund (Unicef) has raised objection over demolition of historical buildings to make way for Orange Line Metro Train Project of the Punjab government.

The UNICEF has expressed concern over the possible distortion of view of two major monuments Chauburji and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore by the project. “The preservation of these historical buildings is a must,” the Unicef observed.

Local traders and opposition parties have also voiced strong concern over the costly project, which, according to them, will cost billion of rupees to the national exchequer.

As many as 25 historical buildings will stand wiped out from the map of Lahore with the completion of the project.  The Lahore graveyard may also be affected by the project.

The Punjab government has reportedly diverted Rs10.80 billion from other development projects to Orange train project. When contacted, Punjab government spokesman Zaeem Qadri said that it was a vital project and it will help improve traffic issues of the city.
