The Supreme Court on Tuesday ordered re-verification of votes in NA-125, where ruling Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) candidate Khawaja Saad Rafique defeated Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Hamid Khan in last general election.
Issuing verdict on the petition filed by counsel for the PTI leader, the apex court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan to dispatch all counter-foils to the National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) for re-verification of votes.
The court also sought a report pertaining to re-verification in three months.
Justice Sheikh Azmat, who was hearing the case, said that the re-verification of votes would satisfy each party.
Talking to the media, PTI leader Naeem ul Haq welcomed the apex court’s verdict.
“Eventually reelections would take place in NA-122 and NA-125 and PTI candidates would win both the seats,” he predicted.
Khawaja Saad Rafique also said that he had no objections over re-verification of votes. He, however, added that there was no ‘legal base’ for re-verification.
Talking to reporters, he said that substandard magnetic ink was used in May 11, 2013 elections. Was re-verification of votes possible after three years, he questioned.
