The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q) Monday challenged the Local Government Amendment Ordinance in the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The two parties separately filed two petitions in the court praying to declare the ordinance null and void as it was unconstitutional not to hold secret balloting for chairman and vice-chairman of district councils, municipal and town committees. Independent candidates could not be forced to join any political party, they added.

The petitions further said it was “unconstitutional and unlawful” to make amendments in the ordinance after the announcement of election schedule.
