Former petroleum minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) leader Dr Asim Hussain on Tuesday was admitted to Jinnah Hospital after a medical board advised that he was suffering from depression and psychological problems.

The Sindh Higher Education Commission (HEC) chairman was shifted to the hospital for a medical checkup. The board diagnosed that he had neurological issues.

The hospital administration said that the test reports of the accused would be forwarded to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) which has been pursuing a corruption reference against him.

Meanwhile, the Sindh government has appointed Hyderabad’s senior lawyer, Ayaz Tunio, as special public prosecutor in the terror case against Dr Asim in an anti-terrorism court (ATC). Tunio has replaced Nisar Durrani, who has been appointed as Sindh advocate general. Besides, corruption reference, Dr Asim Hussain is facing terror charges in a case registered with North Nazimabad Police Station.

He was apprehended by Rangers in 2014 and a 90-day remand was sought from a local court. Later in November 2014, a case was registered which alleged Dr Hussain of providing medical treatment to target killers and militants in his hospital in Karachi. He allegedly provided safe havens to terrorists in the name of ‘medical checkup’.

It may be added that the MRI test report issued by Jinnah Hospital a few days ago declared Dr Asim ‘fit’ with no pain in the back.

  1. All strange things happen in this country. Even if the MRI says he is OK, he is admitted in the same hospital who certified him OK.
