Private, govt schools shut unannounced for security reasons

Students arriving at schools and colleges for classes were directed to return as private and government educational institutes in Peshawar Cantonment had to be closed for security reasons on Saturday.

The Education Department said that the institutions were shut unannounced on Peshawar Deputy Commissioner’s directives. Students said that they were not informed about the day off. Teachers were also not informed about the development.

Security of all private and government schools was beefed up after attack on Army Public School (APS) that claimed lives of over 100 youth and the principal among other faculty.

On 16 December 2014, militants stormed an army-run school in Peshawar. Army troops were dispatched to counter the insurgency. However, more than hundred lives were lost as banned outfit s operatives had opened indiscriminate fire in classrooms.
