Inspector General of Police Ghulam Haider Jamali said on Saturday that war against terrorism would be brought to its logical end. Situation was gradually improving due to ongoing targeted action in the city, he added.
Addressing the passing out parade of 28th batch of Eaglet Force at Razzaqabad Training Centre, the inspector general (IG) said that targeted operation in Karachi had reduced terror-related violence by 80 per cent, incidents of target killing by 55 per cent, kidnapping for ransom by 98 per cent and extortion cases by 53 per cent.
In 2015, Sindh police conducted 10,725 raids in which 753 criminals were killed. Jamali said that police had rendered matchless sacrifices to restore peace in the city. He said 57 policemen embraced martyrdom in the operation last year to ensure safety of property and lives of people. “Police have also resolved high-profile murder cases of Sabin Mehmood, Perveen Rehman and Safoora Goth bus carnage,” he added.
Karachi, a sprawling city of roughly 20 million, has long had a reputation for high crime rates as well as ethnic, political and sectarian violence. Overall level of militant, criminal and sectarian-linked violence have decreased significantly since paramilitary forces began a sweeping crackdown in 2013.
