Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif has ordered high-level enquiry into alleged scam of awarding contract for purchasing food items valuing Rs 1.82 billion. The contract for prisoner’s food was given by Inspector General (IG) Jail Punjab to his favorite company in defiance of rules and regulations.
According to documents available with Online contract was awarded for supply of food items to thousands of prisoners in jails all over Punjab every year. Standard has been set in respect of quality of these food items.
Not only PEPRA rules have been violated in awarding this contract but also rules and regulations of government of Punjab have been breached. The process of open tenders has not been pursued.
Audit has also pointed out this irregularity. CM Punjab had taken notice of this scam and ordered inquiry into the matter but home secretary Punjab has shelved the file of the case instead of holding inquiry.
Online made several efforts to contact home secretary and IG jails to ascertain their stance but they did not bother to give response.
