Anti-polio drive begins

A five-day anti-polio campaign was launched in Karachi on Monday in which 2.1 million children would be administered anti-polio vaccines.
Karachi Commissioner Asif Haider Shah, who launched the polio drive, would personally supervise the campaign for which district polio control rooms had been set up at the offices of the deputy commissioners of all the six districts of Karachi.
According to reports, about 6,296 polio teams and 1,459 area incharges have been deployed in all union councils of the city. These teams would be given a security cover by 5,000 police personnel.
During the anti-polio drive in Sindh, a total target population of 8.2 million children less than five years of age (approx. 2.1 million in Karachi) would be administrated anti-polio drops. The anti-polio teams would cover all 188 union councils of Karachi and 934 union councils in interior Sindh during the five-day drive started from January 11.
Meanwhile, the paramilitary Rangers, through its mobile teams, comprising motorcycle squads and on-foot personnel, are supplementing security cover provided by policemen to the polio workers engaged in the ongoing NIDs campaign in Karachi.
