Akhtar blames PPP for Karachi municipal mess

Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s (MQM) mayoral candidate Waseem Akhtar claims that the Pakistan People’s Party-led Sindh government is using ‘delaying tactics’ to prolong municipal issues of Karachi where overflowing gutters have been creating chaos, especially during the last couple of days, reported a local channel on Tuesday.

“The PPP is deliberately prolonging civic issue in Karachi using delaying tactics in formation of local government institutions, but we are well aware of such moves and are determined to get mayoral powers,” Akhtar said while addressing a protest demonstration in the city.

Akhtar was of the view that the Sindh local government minister should not interfere in municipal affairs. The MQM-nominated mayor’s views came minutes after Sindh Minister for Local Government Jam Khan Shoro claimed that sewerage lines were choked in Karachi by gunny bags which resulted in overflowing of filthy water on the main roads of metropolis. Shoro said the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board Managing Director had been directed to hold an inquiry to ascertain as to who dropped the gunny bags in the gutters. Shoro vowed to bring findings of the probe on media, claiming “a conspiracy is being hatched against Karachi and the Sindh government.”
